A Time for Change: After 7 extraordinary years

After seven extraordinary years leading Rebuild East Midlands, I have made the decision to step down from my role as Chief Executive Officer. This decision comes after much reflection and consideration. Rebuild East Midlands began with a personal encounter that changed my life — and ultimately shaped the vision of this organisation.

When my children were small, I facilitated a parent and toddler group. It was there that I met *Mary, a woman who had come to Derby with her children after experiencing human trafficking and sexual exploitation. She was brave, resilient, and determined to rebuild her life — but she was also struggling deeply with the physical and mental health effects of her past trauma. Over the months that followed, I walked alongside her and witnessed just how difficult it was to access the specialist, long-term support she needed — not just for a few weeks or months, but for as long as it took to truly recover.

It was Mary’s story, and others like hers, that led me to found Rebuild East Midlands. I started this organisation in direct response to the gap in Derbyshire for open-ended, trauma-informed support for survivors of modern slavery. Our vision has always been clear: no one recovering from the impact of modern slavery should have to do so alone. We don’t believe in ticking boxes or time-limited support. We believe in walking alongside people, however long that journey is.

I am incredibly proud of what we’ve built. Over the years, Rebuild East Midlands has supported more than 100 individuals like Mary. We’ve grown a compassionate, skilled, and dedicated team who go above and beyond every single day. Together, we’ve created a community that empowers, restores, and advocates for lasting change.

But no organisation should stand still. As we step into a new chapter, I believe it’s time for someone with new energy and vision to take Rebuild East Midlands into its next stage of development. The need is still great, and the opportunities to deepen our impact are growing. I’m excited to see how the next leader will carry this vision forward and build on the strong foundation we’ve laid.

To the individuals who have trusted us with their support, to our incredible staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters — thank you. Your belief in our mission has been the driving force behind everything we’ve achieved.

Though I am stepping down, I remain deeply invested in this mission. I’ll continue to support this organisation in new ways and will always be cheering it on from the sidelines.

The future is bright — and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
