Initial Support

If someone has recently left exploitation, or there are concerns they may be experiencing modern slavery, timely support can make a significant difference.

Our Initial Support service provides practical, trauma informed support during the early stages of recovery, helping people understand their options, access immediate support and begin to regain stability.

We can help with:

  • Understanding immediate needs and reducing risk.
  • Accessing safe accommodation and emergency support where appropriate.
  • Support to navigate the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).
  • Accessing healthcare, legal advice and other specialist services.
  • Practical help with essential items and day to day needs.
  • Working alongside other agencies to coordinate support.
  • Planning next steps and ensuring people are connected with the support that is right for them.

Our approach

We know that the days and weeks following exploitation can feel overwhelming. We work at the individual’s pace, providing compassionate, practical support while helping them understand their rights, choices and the support available to them.

Depending on an individual’s circumstances, support may involve helping them move on to longer term services, connecting them with specialist organisations or ensuring they have the information and support they need to continue their recovery.

Year One Impact of the Initial Support Project

Started in September 2024 as a discrete project, the Initial Support service has had a massive impact on the individuals who have been referred into it as they exit exploitation.  Meeting those people where they are at and assisting with their immediate needs, has helped in the first steps on their journey of recovery.
