This week you can make double the difference for people in Derby & Derbyshire who are rebuilding their lives having been through the trauma of exploitation. Your matched donation will help enable and empower survivors to rebuild their lives with safety, dignity and independence.
This could mean help securing permanent accommodation, education or employment opportunities, joining groups and activities to combat isolation and build community, or support dealing with their trauma through our therapeutic wellbeing service.
Today you can fund a fresh start for someone recovering from the impact of modern slavery.
Read Vanessa’s story to find out how Rebuild helped her.
Vanessa came to the UK in 2012 when she got married, but experienced modern slavery at home and was made street homeless in 2016. She spent the next three years homeless and sofa-surfing and was in a terrible state physically and emotionally, with ongoing injuries from the years of abuse. All this time, Vanessa had no status in the UK and had her asylum claim refused.
In 2019, a pregnant Vanessa moved to Derby and was connected with Rebuild where she was given support – people who would listen to her and offer practical help with food parcels, baby clothes and nappies, which made her life so much easier. Rebuild was also there to help with the paperwork relating to her asylum claim.
Vanessa joined the Rebuild groups and activities giving the opportunity to meet others, and included a trip to the seaside which her children loved.
After a long wait, in 2025 Vanessa finally got her leave to remain. She and her children now live happily in a lovely home which Rebuild helped to furnish, and that she hopes to be able to buy one day. Through Rebuild’s support, Vanessa has gained a sense of independence and is starting to create a stable, hopeful future for her and her family.
Matched giving means your support goes twice as far to help survivors of modern slavery rebuild their lives.
